The traditional masalachai is a spiced beverage brewed with different proportions ofwarming spices. The spice mixture, called Karha, uses a base ofground ginger andgreen cardamom pods. Other spicesare usually added to this baseor karha. For example, mostmasala chai found on the street, in restaurants or in homesincorporates one or more of the following along with ginger andcardamom, namely: cinnamon,  staranise and/or fennel seeds,peppercorn,and cloves. In the Western world,using allspice, to either replace orcomplement the cinnamon and clove, is alsocommon.
