Description:

PISTON PIN FOR ANY SIZE & MODEL WITH HAVINg HARDNESS HRC 55-60

A pistonpin, also known as a wrist pin, is a hardened steel pin whichconnects an engine''s piston to a connecting rod. The piston pin ishollow to reduce weight and is held in place with a number ofdifferent methods. Most factory-stock piston pin designs rely on apressed fit with the piston pin being pressed into the connectingrod. High-performance pistons are typically held in place with wireclips or aluminum buttons. When installing a new piston pin itis imperative that the pin be oiled where it passes through thepiston. Failure to adequately lubricate the piston pin will resultin a seized piston nearly every time. The high heat generated bythe connecting rod rotating within the piston causes a dry orinadequately lubricated pin to fall into the piston. This willcause the engine to lock up as the piston locks onto the pistonpin. Broken connecting rods and even a broken engine block couldalso result.

While moststock piston pins are made of hardened steel, many high-performanceapplications utilize tool steel pins. These tool steel pins are thestrongest and most durable available and can withstand ultra highhorsepower. The use of high-quality materials also allows the toolsteel piston pins to be made very light weight. This aids in theengine''s ability to accelerate at a much faster rate than anequally prepared engine equipped with heavier pistonpins.

While mostpistons are sold complete with piston pins included, some of thehighest-quality racing pistons are sold without pins. This allowsthe engine builder to purchase the piston pin package which bestsuits the engine''s build characteristics. Nearly everyprofessional engine builder around the world has a unique manner ofassembling engines; most will agree, however, that full-floatingpiston pins are the correct call for a serious performance engineassembly.

In a stockengine, the piston pins are lubricated and cooled by oil which issplashed or thrown off of the crankshaft as it spins within theengine block. In most normal driving conditions, this is asuccessful design. In racing or high-performance applications, theengine builder will often incorporate a system of tubes directedtoward the bottom of the pistons. These tubes spray oil directlyonto the piston pins and the piston''s pin bosses, maintaininglubrication and cooling efforts. By keeping the piston pins cool, the pistons are able to generate maximum horsepower withoutheat-related engine failure.

piston pinsare distinguished by the highest quality, precision and applicationvariety. The product range comprises diameters of 6 to 250 mm. Foruse in passenger car engines, piston pins are formed by MAHLE usingstate-of-the-art multi-stage presses—in this way, innovative andcomplex forms can also be realized for greater load resistance. Formotor racing engines subject to extreme loads, piston pins areproduced from nitrided steels with a PVD coating. At the same time, chromium nitrided layers increase the protection at increasingtemperatures.

Newmaterials and forms for even greater loadresistance
In thecourse of ongoing development of the MAHLE MONOTHERM® pistons madefrom forged steel, the MAHLE piston pins are also examined withrespect to innovative forms and materials. New pins and bossgeometries, as well as profiled piston pins and profiled pin bores, pin bore recesses and horizontal oval pin bores promise aconsiderable increase in the load resistance.

Testswhich leave nothing to chance
With components subject to heavy loads, such as piston pins, materials testing and quality control provide the key to greatercomponent robustness and eliminate the risk of engine damage. MAHLEhas therefore invested a great deal in test processes in thisarea—and will continue to do so. State-of-the-art test standsensure that parts are not only theoretically validated, but canalso be validated and released by physical bench tests. At the sametime, this satisfies the high quality requirements of theautomotive industry.
